as a society,
we like to categorise.
binaries, boxes and definitions
comfort with their supposed clarity
this is a man!
this is woman!
one celeb is villainized
another, glorified
for basically doing the
same thing.
with social issues,
we decided whom they concern,
who is supposed to care
‘women’s issues’
and ‘men’s issues’,
issues concerning people of colour
or the disabled community.
periods,
abortion rights,
sexual harassment
and body image
for women to worry about
right?
while men concern themselves
with taxes
paying bills
taking the bins out
right?
how about issues
that concern people
abortion impacts the lives of
anyone with a uterus
while periods are relevant to men
just as much as to those
who actually bleed
if the majority of perpetrators of
street harassment
are male
then surely that should categorise
as a ‘men’s issue’
and yet
it is women who are told not to
‘ask for it’
people issues,
human rights concerns,
matters for us all to worry
and learn about,
to fight for
there is no such thing as a
‘women’s issue’
a ‘man’s issue’
social justice
becomes weaker
the more we categorise
splintering
the movement
into unworkable fragments
when what we need
is unity.
