'smallness'

women are being shrunk down

at every opportunity

encouraged to be

smaller

thinner

quieter

while men are celebrated

praised for being tall

physically large

muscular

loud.

taller women

are told not to wear heels

it’s too intimidating

to the men who have

long been taught;

height dictates their masculine presence

huge body builder men

and Disney princes with their

upside-down triangle physique

are rewarded

for taking up space

yet muscular, larger women

are abnormal.

it’s not their place

to dominate space

the way men are expected to

why is smallness the norm

for women in the media

the distorted representation

of the female body

tells us to

take up less space

smaller, thinner, quieter.

we are the second sex

after all
